Over the past five years, in the first study of its kind, linguist Lisa Smartt has collected over 1,500 accounts of final words from people who were a few hours to a few weeks from dying. One of the outcomes of this collected research is her new book, Words at the Threshold: What We Say as We’re Nearing Death. In this expansive conversation with host Kim Corbin, Lisa decodes the symbolism of those last words, showing how the language of the dying points the way to a transcendent world beyond our own.
