Dan Willis

For the past twenty-five years, Captain Dan Willis has served as a police officer for the La Mesa Police Department near San Diego, California. He has been a homicide detective for nine years, investigating crimes of violence and cold cases; a SWAT commander; and the developer and coordinator of the police department’s wellness program. He graduated from San Diego State University with a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice, and graduated from the FBI’s National Academy for senior police managers in Quantico, Virginia.

Captain Willis has been La Mesa’s Officer of the Year twice within four years, was nominated as Detective of the Year for the State of California, and was nominated as Homicide Detective of the Year by the California Homicide Investigators Association.

For the past ten years, Captain Willis has been an instructor for the San Diego Public Safety Institute, the county’s police academy. He has provided emotional-survival training to various emergency-first-responder agencies throughout California and in various states. He is willing to travel anywhere to provide emotional-survival training to emergency first responders. He lives in San Diego with his wife and two stepsons.
