A Remarkable Story of Man and Dog Demonstrates the Transformational Power of Unconditional Love

A few years ago music producer and musician Tom Corwin’s golden retriever, Bob, passed away unexpectedly. Maybe you know someone like Tom. He’s the kind of guy who brings his dog with him wherever he goes — to the coffee shop, to the grocery store, even when he goes on tour — all along the way gathering more friends and neighbors who had come to know and love his dog. To let these "friends of Bob" know that he had died, Tom decided to write a letter as a tribute to his life, which would also tell them what they might not have known — the surprising story of how Bob became Tom’s dog and friend.

Once he sent the letter out, Tom received an outpouring of heartfelt responses to what he thought was just a slightly unusual story about his dog. He came to realize his story reiterated the universal tale about the possibility of change and the power of un-conditional love. Urged by friends and strangers to bring the story to more people, Tom designed and made by hand a special book version of the letter, complete with flipbook illustrations of Bob.

Mostly Bob is that book.

In very few words, it tells a simple but remarkable story. Bob was originally Tom’s neighbor’s dog — an abused, ferocious, and untrusting dog named Red whom no one could approach. Red spent his life tied up in the backyard. He only got attention when his owner yelled at him or brought him his one daily bowl of food. Through narrowed, suspicious eyes, Red watched as Tom ministered to his previous dog, an elderly golden retriever named Bubba, who in old age had to be carried up or down 100 steps whenever Tom came or went from his house. When Bubba passed away, Red began his plan to become Tom’s next dog. Written with humor and love, Mostly Bob tells the touching story of how Red chose Tom and slowly transformed into a completely different dog name Bob.
