This wonderful book helps us learn how to integrate the fundamental principles of contemplative spirituality into our modern lives in the world today. In the nonsectarian monk-in-the-world spirit of Thomas Merton and Bede Griffiths, Brother Wayne has opened the mystic heart and noble mind of a monk in order to show us the many sacred opportunities we can find in our own lives for sharing his own contemplative vocation and delighting in the world without being overcome by it.
Lama Surya Das, author of Awakening the Buddha Within
There may be better spiritual writers in the United States than Brother Wayne but I don't know who they are. An urban lay monk with deep wisdom from both the West and the East, he opens up the possibilities of contemplation blended with social concern to us gently, persuasively, and warmly. Reading a few pages every day will have an enormous impact on those searching for spiritual food.
Father Andrew Greeley
In A Monk in the World, the author explores what it has meant for him to live as a monk outside the monastery, to integrate teachings from the worlds religions with his own Catholic training, to combine his vigorous spiritual practice with the necessities of making a living and pursuing a course of social justice in a big American city as well as how readers can find their own spiritual path amidst the rigors of everyday life. Along the way, Teasdale explores the real world topics of friendship; time, work, and money; the problem and opportunity of the homeless; a contemplative understanding of suffering; the struggle to promote personal and social change; as well as the as the role of the church and in building spiritual understanding.
If youre looking for encouragement to deepen, broaden, and sharpen the way you think about and live your spirituality in our contemporary multifaceted world, especially now, this book is packed with inspiration, challenging ideas, personal experience, well-founded practical suggestions and references to numerous resources.
Building on the wonderful insights of his first book, The Mystic Heart, Teasdale gives a compelling and moving glimpse of the unique spiritual path he has followed, and how everyone can find their own internal monastery and cultivate a spirtual life.

More Praise for A Monk in the World
Once in a rare while you encounter a soul on fire with divine love, committed to living a life of contemplation and service beyond the walls of the monastery. For Wayne Teasdale, the world itself is a monastery. Reading about his journey, we cannot help but reflect on our own, and emerge with a deeper commitment to a spirituality that includes both time for our own soul and engaged social action.
Joan Borysenko, Ph.D. author of A Woman's Journey to God and Inner Peace for Busy People
With grace, humility, rare mystical passion and in a prose of luminous simplicity Wayne Teasdale guides us into the heart of what it means to live a life of love in action in the world. A Monk in the World will help seekers of all paths integrate inner revelation with a radical, compassionate commitment to service and justice.
Andrew Harvey, author of The Direct Path: Creating a Journey to the Divine Using the Worlds Mystical Traditions
Teasdale's account of spiritual life in the midst of the city touched me with its compassionate understanding of the real dimensions of the search for God and the moral work of growing our souls. Although he writes from another tradition than mine, he is an ecumenical and post-triumphalist pilgrim. Reading how he shares his rich contemplative life, I felt often the tug of spirit refreshing me in my own devotion. He will most likely do the same for you.
Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, Naropa University, co-author of From Age-ing to Sage-ing
. . . This book is where the growing edge is: available spirituality drawn from the worlds great traditions, our path to a viable future. Interspirituality for the millions: an eminently readable and applicable guide to a beautiful life.
Beatrice Bruteau, author of Radical Optimism and What We Can Learn from the East
With exquisite sincerity, beauty, and wisdom, Brother Wayne offers an inspiring model of living an authentic life, participating in the bazaar of life with a heart fragrant with love, truth, and spaciousness.
Jamal Rahman, Sufi teacher and author of The Fragrance of Islam
In A Monk in the World Teasdale does an admirable job in the invitation, the instruction, and the motivation. As a result he may not, for long, be the only monk in the world.
