LIFE AHEAD: On Learning and the Search for Meaning
J. Krishnamurti

In Life Ahead: On Learning and the Search for Meaning (New World Library, October 2005), one of the greatest teachers of our
time presents a practical philosophy of learning and understanding that
moves far beyond the traditional forms of education promoted in most schools
and colleges today. The life he holds forth requires a complete change
of thought, even a revolution. This revolution begins not with theory
and ideation, he writes, which eventually prove worthless,
but with a radical transformation in the mind itself. Such transformation
takes place only through an education that concentrates on the total development
of the human being.
Drawn from the transcripts of talks Krishnamurti gave to Indian students,
in which he challenged the habitual thought patterns created by traditional
education, Life Ahead covers a wide range of universal topics sure to
challenge and enlighten all readers. Topics include the danger of competition,
which by breeding fear blocks experience; the value of solitude; the need
to understand both the conscious and the unconscious mind to prevent internal
contradiction; and the critical difference between concentration and attention,
between knowledge and learning.
Krishnamurti also explores the dangers of blindly succumbing to authority;
the interplay between freedom and discipline; the question of whether
true security really exists; why learning requires a focus beyond knowledge;
the true nature of love, envy, and intelligence; how creativity is based
in understanding rather than memory; and the search for the true nature
of things.
One of the great spiritual philosophers of our time, Jiddu Krishnamurti
was born in 1895 in Andhra Pradesh, India. When he was fourteen, members
of the Theosophical Society, a Western spiritual movement that combined
Eastern and Western religious traditions, found him and became convinced
they had found the new world leader. Subsequently, theosophist Annie Besant
adopted him and raised him in England. By the 1920s he was attracting
worldwide press attention and audiences of thousands. In 1929, he abandoned
the Theosophical Society and set out on his own, teaching a secular philosophy
bound by no caste, nationality, religion, or tradition. For more than
sixty years, Krishnamurti traveled the world teaching his philosophy to
millions. His talks have been preserved in over seventy books. He died
in 1986 in Ojai, California.
