New Book Offers Ancient Truths for Our Modern World
The Bhagavad Gita was published more than 5,000 years ago and is considered one of the most brilliant spiritual works ever
written; in fact, it has often been called India’s greatest contribution to the world. Its story is set on a battlefield, a metaphor for the
battles we all face as human beings who live, grow, age, and die.
Now, a new book called Essential Wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita: Ancient Truths for Our Modern World (New World Library, March 2006) offers a clear and
enjoyable interpretation of this classic work. Jack Hawley, a student and teacher of the Gita for many years, has extracted its pure wisdom and organized
it into helpful categories designed specifically for modern day readers.
There are five chapters that correspond to the big questions spiritual seekers have been grappling with for millennia: Who am I? What is my purpose
in life? Who, or what, is God? What should my relationship be with the Divine? And is it possible for me to live a fulfilled life when the world doesn’t
seem to support it?
Each chapter of Essential Wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita offers short excerpts from the Gita that are organized under headings that are perfectly relevant
for today’s readers. A few examples include: Know the Real You, Be Active in the World, Wake Up and Move Up, Know Both World and Spirit, Learn Your Very
Nature, Seek the Highest Self, Experience the Awe, Know How to Die, Develop Spiritual Vision, and Become an Illumined Soul.
Essential Wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita gives us the essence of the teachings of a major, classical spiritual work in a way that can powerfully impact our
21st century lives. Jack Hawley says it best "The Gita’s wonderous teachings live on, helping us modern people as they have helped countless hundreds of
millions of people down through the ages."
About the Author
Jack Hawley, Ph.D., has emerged as one of the preeminent teachers of the Bhagavad Gita in the world today. Each year, he spends six months
in India studying and lecturing at a spiritual community, and six months in the U.S., living and teaching the wisdom of the Gita. In 1978 his search for new
approaches to individual and organizational transformation took him to India to study with the famed spiritual teacher Sai Baba. The one-month trip grew into
a deep, lasting relationship with Eastern wisdom and a new career as writer, lecturer, and teacher. Hawley is also a business consultant and president of
Jack A. Hawley Associates. When not traveling, he and his wife Louise live in Southern California.
