My father once gave me a great piece of advice: “If you can talk,” he said, “you can write.”Almost all of us can talk, so almost all of us can write. Why don’t more of us do it? It’s certainly one of the most fulfilling, rewarding things we can do.My mother once sent me a poem she had written. That’s all of her writing I have: one poem. I treasure that poem. I put it in a frame. She revealed a side of herself — a depth, an insight — I never imagined was there. It made me wish my parents had written more.

In January of 2013 the call went out: World Book Night (WBN) was going to take place on April 23, and volunteers were needed to be Book Givers and spread the love of reading, person to person. After hearing about a colleague’s great experience last year, I submitted my application. What’s not to love about sharing books? It’s something I do professionally and personally every day.

Many moons ago, I crossed paths with New World Library author Bill Plotkin in a most unusual way. Little did I realize then that I would eventually join the marketing team here and help share his revolutionary work with the world as his publicist.

A coaching client of mine, a successful entrepreneur and scientist, once showed me his happiness assessment. Every day he ranked on a scale from 1 to 10 how he was performing in a variety of areas: work, relationship, spiritual practice, hobbies, exercise, and a few others. He would then calculate an average of these numbers to determine his daily overall happiness quotient. He showed me a chart he kept, tracking the daily rises and falls of this measure. It looked much like the Dow Jones stock market index, with its various trends up and down, seesawing between deep valleys and steep climbs.

Over a hundred years ago, a budding naturalist noticed that mutual aid was a significant factor in determining fitness for survival. Prince Pyotr Alekseyevich Kropotkin, an early fan of Darwin’s theories, led research expeditions through Siberia and Eurasia, planning to add his own observations to the scientific literature on evolution. But soon enough he was confused and, initially at least, sorely disappointed.

“I failed to find — although I was eagerly looking for it — that bitter struggle for the means of existence, among animals belonging to the same species, which was considered by most Darwinists (though not always Darwin himself) as the dominant characteristic of the struggle for life, and the main factor of evolution,” Kropotkin wrote in his 1902 book Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution.

I was asked to write a blog about the latest trends in mind, body, spirit publishing. It got me thinking, first about the word trends and then about our publishing program in general. Something in the word trends implies things that come and go, things — whether fashions or ideas or whatever — that are popular for a while and then fade a bit.

For a day that’s supposed to be all about giving and receiving love, February 14th sure leaves a lot of single people feeling alone and a lot of people in relationships feeling disappointed. Check out the faces of people the day after the 14th. Some frowns may have faded, but many a mated person will still be suffering from an expectation hangover — disappointed by yet another Valentine’s Day that didn’t measure up to their hopeful, and unrealistic, ideals.

There is a famous Zen dialogue from ancient China about a monk and a teacher. The monk arrives at the monastery and says to the teacher, “I’ve arrived. Please give me your teaching.” The teacher says, “Have you eaten your breakfast?” The monk responds, “Yes, I have.” The teacher says, “Wash your bowl.” The monk understands.
Repair Emotional Eating by Loving Yourself Thin: The Four Habits You Must Develop by Julie M. Simon

Most of us find it challenging to love ourselves unconditionally. Excess body fat, cellulite, acne, and body parts we believe to be too big, too small, or too flabby are, after all, not easy to accept. We may wish we were smarter, funnier, younger, more driven, entrepreneurial, or athletic and find it hard to make peace with the areas in which we believe we fall short. It can seem nearly impossible to stop disparaging ourselves with critical comments and judgments. But through this disparagement we deny ourselves the love and kindness that is our birthright. Self-rejection and self-condemnation trigger both hopelessness and powerlessness. These states are not motivating, and they lead to depression, resignation, isolation, and emotional eating.

Diet for a New America: How the Food Movement is Gaining Strength by Ocean Robbins

Our food chain is in crisis. Big agribusiness has made profits more important than your health, more important than the environment, more important than your right to know how your food is produced.

The United States now spends nearly 20 percent of its GDP on health care, and levels of obesity, diabetes, and chronic illness are higher than ever.

But even as so many people are suffering, beneath the surface a revolution has been building.

Before he was the engaging professor who brought mythology into people’s living rooms through his conversations with Bill Moyers, before he became known as the thinker whose ideas influenced Star Wars, and before his now-beloved phrase “follow your bliss” entered the popular lexicon, Joseph Campbell was a young man who tried his hand at writing fiction. At the age of twenty-nine, after years of Depression-era unemployment, when he lived off money he had earned playing saxophone in a jazz combo and read the world’s great literature in a syllabus of his own design, Campbell published his first short story, “Strictly Platonic.” That tale remained the famed mythologist’s only published piece of fiction, until now. We are pleased to announce the recent publication of Mythic Imagination: Collected Short Fiction by Joseph Campbell.

Set the best of intentions, overeat, shame and guilt yourself, repeat. It’s a familiar holiday pattern that ends in weight gain for many overeaters every year. The holiday season generally means more traveling, more stress, less time for physical activity and relaxation, more eating in general, and more emotional eating (especially if you have difficult relatives). But this time of year doesn’t have to be a recipe for weight gain. With a little forethought, you can implement the following six tips to avoid the holiday bulge and maintain your weight into the new year.

Knowledge of the afterlife can trigger dazzling transformations in body, mind, and spirit. It unleashes our authentic selves, radically resets our values, and deepens our sense of life purpose. From it we discover that the real nature of the universe is the very essence of benevolence. In this comprehensive work, Julia Assante probes what happens when we die, approaching with scholarly precision historical and religious accounts, near-death experiences, and after-death communication. She then presents convincing evidence of discarnate existence and communication with the dead and offers practical ways to make contact with departed loved ones to heal and overcome guilt, fear, and grief.

What does gratitude have to do with managing your time?
Maybe more than you might think . . .

In external time, objects depreciate over time. What if we could live so that objects, relationships, and feelings appreciated over time, our appreciation literally expanding their meaning? What would it mean to measure time by appreciation and gratitude? What if feeling more gratitude could actually help us expand our sense of time, especially in those moments when we feel like there’s not enough of it?
