As the submissions editor here at New World Library, I’ve reviewed thousands of query letters, proposals, and manuscripts and spoken with umpteen hopeful authors. Frequently, I wish I could, like our founder, Marc Allen, says, “give away the essence of what I know” to every author who approaches us. So when WritingRaw.com asked us to complete an interview about the submissions review process, I was happy to oblige. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look, with answers from me and from our editorial director, Georgia Hughes.

The blockbuster film Inception has certainly brought dreaming into the spotlight this summer. According to New World Library author and Active Dreaming expert Robert Moss, many of the dreamworld concepts portrayed in the film aren’t just the stuff of sci-fi but have existed in shamanic dreaming traditions for generations and are still accessible to us today. One example is shared dreaming, which Robert wrote about in this recent Beliefnet blog post:

Shared Dreaming as Home Entertainment

You’re separated from your sweetheart and you’d like to have some good private time together. Can you do that? Absolutely. As in the old song, “You can reach [him or her] with your mind.” The next question is: Your place or mine, or somewhere else altogether? How about meeting up at an elegant restaurant in Paris, or on a lava beach in Hawaii, or at the Moon Cafe (in the astral realm of Luna, don’t you know?) where the bubbly is better than any earthly brand of champagne. You can do this.

Last week saw two devastating reports on the American way of waging war: a Washington Post special feature on the failures of the post-9/11 security establishment and the shocking disclosure of 92,000 documents from soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan.
Over nine years in Afghanistan — making this the longest war we have ever fought — we have sacrificed nearly two thousand American lives, caused untold Afghani and Pakistani deaths, and spent at least $300 billion. And the Taliban are stronger than when we began. Meanwhile, in Iraq, one commander reported, “We are making terrorists faster than we can kill them.”

Andrew Lang (1844-1922), a prolific Scots author best-known for his popular "color" books of fairytales, wrote a book on dreams that is one of my favorites. Titled The Book of Dreams and Ghosts, it was first published in 1897. Lang affected a cool skepticism towards this subject material, which allows him to slide readers cunningly into the deep end, as he recounts case after case of timefolding and interdimensional travel in dreams.

As a Buddhist priest, I hear quite a bit about compassion, that brand of unconditional love we imagine ourselves to be incapable of having for one another. Talking about compassion may be one reason it is so frequently misunderstood as something that we should be doing. But compassion doesn't need doing. It exists already in the harmony of things just the way they are.

An excerpt from Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain:

Creative visualization is the technique of using your imagination to create what you want in your life. There is nothing at all new, strange, or unusual about creative visualization. You are already using it every day, every minute, in fact. It is your natural power of imagination, the basic creative energy of the universe, which you use constantly, whether or not you are aware of it.

One minute of clearly focusing on a dream or goal can overcome months, even years, of misguided thinking. One minute of visualization can overcome a great many doubts and fears and bring you a step closer to realizing your dream. One minute of prayer can work miracles.

An excerpt from The Mindfulness Code by Donald Altman:

Dawn has barely broken this morning when I step out of the house with a solitary goal in mind: to get The Oregonian, deposited each morning in an oblong, yellow container that stands next to the mailbox. This morning I am in a hurry, and my mind churns with I-centric thoughts of future time. What should I eat for breakfast? I need to return those calls from yesterday. What handouts do I need to print for that next class? I wonder how many clients I am seeing today. I’m running late, so I’d better hurry....

Two weeks ago, NWL Senior Graphic Designer Tracy Cunningham and I attended a talk with Joanna Macy, renowned environmental activist, Buddhist, and future New World Library author.

Tracy and I had both read Joanna’s memoir, Widening Circles, and after listening to a recording of her speaking with Bill Plotkin, we knew she was an incredibly moving and inspiring speaker. As the event’s organizer and co-speaker, Jonathan Gustin, remarked, some people can transmit their life’s purpose simply through their presence; Joanna Macy is definitely one of those people. She has a powerful aura of joy, deep caring, and immense love for the world.

The women of New World Library got together and held a clothing swap this week. Everyone took advice from our book Clutter Busting by Brooks Palmer and let go of clothes, shoes, and accessories we no longer wanted — the lightly-worn too-big, too-small, unflattering, no-longer-appealing stuff, and even a few brand-new items we either received as gifts or bought on a whim and later realized just didn’t work. According to Palmer, “Clothing represents different emotional periods of your life. If you keep a lot of things you don’t wear, your clothes closet has become a photo from your past.” So we took those words to heart and did some clutter busting of our own.

I love a good road trip — especially when it affords me a chance to spend a weekend connecting with book lovers (and spending time with my family after the show). My recent trip to staff the New World Library booth at the LA Times Festival of Books was, in a word, fabulous! What’s not to love about a beautiful weekend on the UCLA campus connecting directly with our readers?

A woman came up to me after a talk I gave a while ago and asked a very good question: “Bottom line,” she said, “Are you saying anyone can succeed?” I knew exactly what she was thinking as she asked it: Even me? With all my problems?

I thought it over for a moment. No one had ever asked me that question before; I hadn’t asked myself that question before. It’s a good question. Can anybody succeed?

As a result of the extraordinary air travel restrictions due to the spreading cloud of volcanic ash from the eruption in Iceland, New World Library’s Associate Publisher, Munro Magruder, and I were unable to make it to the London Book Fair this year. We officially pulled the plug on our plans last Friday after our evening flight was cancelled and all direct flights from San Francisco to London were showing zero availability for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

For the first time in the Bay Area, the Green Festival opened its doors April 10 and 11 for a springtime show in honor of Earth Day’s 40th anniversary. Our employees from several departments work at our Green Festival booth, where we offer a large selection of our books for 50 percent off the cover price. It’s a nice way for us to get up close and personal with the people who love our books. We were excited to meet all of you and thank you for your great conversations and, as always, for your patronage. If you didn’t get a chance to see us this time, you’ll have another opportunity at the fall Green Festival on November 5, 6, and 7.

Planes are off course more than ninety percent of the time. Yet the pilots just keep correcting, over and over, and the plane arrives at its destination.

When someone first told me that, I thought, That’s the story of my life. I’ve been off course much of the time, but I keep remembering to do a bit of course correction now and then and get back on track. There are a vast number of ways to do course correction: find what works for you.

An excerpt from The Ten Things to Do When Your Life Falls Apart:
“He who sits in the house of grief will eventually sit in the garden.”
— Hafiz

Hard times, more than any others, reveal to us the truth that the signature of our humanity is our emotional nature. What differentiates us from stones and butterflies is the degree to which what happens to us affects us on an emotional level. We don’t just experience things — get a divorce, lose our house, watch our dog die from eating poison — we have feelings about these events. It is the depth and nuance of our feelings — of our joy, sorrow, anger, and fear — that give texture to our humanity.

This excerpt on silence comes from a newly released edition of In the Heart of the World by Mother Teresa. This powerful portrait of one of the most beloved women of all time is told in her own words through a fascinating blend of daily life experiences, prayers, and spiritual wisdom. Enjoy!
* * * “Yesterday is gone.
Tomorrow has not yet come.
We have only today.
Let us begin.”

In the silence of the heart God speaks. If you face God in prayer and silence, God will speak to you. Then you will know that you are nothing. It is only when you realize your nothingness, your emptiness, that God can fill you with Himself. Souls of prayer are souls of great silence.

A colleague recently asked me to answer the following question. It was such a good question, I found myself writing far more than I expected, and thought it would make a perfect blog post:
What spiritual practice or technique have you found most effective in getting you through these difficult times?

Write from the Heart (Or At Least Make a Start!)

These days most of my writing is limited to press materials, short and factual emails, and putting together newsletters for local nonprofits. After talking to fellow NWL publicist Kim Corbin about a short story I wrote in college I realized that I missed creative writing. I started to think more and more about that paper and the class I wrote it for…I got a good grade on it…and more importantly, I enjoyed writing it…so I made a date with myself, took a look at Hal Zina Bennett’s Write Starts: Prompts, Quotes, and Exercises to Jumpstart Your Creativity and assigned myself the following exercise from the book. I’ll let you know how it goes, and I promise to start writing and stop looking for my old typewriter (which would make my trip down memory lane complete).

Get Unreal: A Writing Exercise
By Hal Zina Bennett

Legend has it that Picasso once got into a discussion with a neighbor who looked at his paintings and told the artist that while his colors were nice and the picture was very pleasant, he should try making them a bit more realistic. Otherwise, he advised, nobody would know what Picasso’s paintings were supposed to be about. The artist, exercising a rare amount of patience, nodded thoughtfully and asked his neighbor if he had an example of what he meant by realistic.
