New World Library Is Celebrating Gold by Tona Pearce Myers, Production Director for New World Library

No, New World Library is not celebrating our golden anniversary in business; we are celebrating becoming a Green Press Initiative (GPI) Gold Certified Environmentally Responsible Publisher.

The Green Press Initiative describes its certification program for environmentally responsible publishers as follows:

Publishers that are certified to the standards established by Green Press Initiative demonstrate that virtually all controversial fiber has been eliminated from their supply chain and that they are meeting certain benchmarks related to recycled fiber and fiber that is sourced from well managed forests. The certification program also considers many other elements of a publisher’s operations including efforts to minimize waste and energy consumption.

The certification has three tiers—bronze, silver and gold—representing greater levels of environmental achievement. There are also several different ways that each tier of certification can be obtained which provides some flexibility for publishers that choose to emphasize different types of environmental initiatives.

New World Library joined the GPI in 1999, and since then we have worked hard to make our business more environmentally friendly. We have been using 100 percent PCW (postconsumer-waste) recycled paper in the printing of the majority our books since 2000, installed solar panels to help power our office in 2002, and reduced our office waste by 80 percent by starting a worm farm and compost heap.

We are proud to have participated in the GPI’s pilot program for certification and are now one of only five publishers to be certified at the gold level. We will make every effort to continue our certification next year.
